During the Christmas Action 2014 VWO-students of the Sint-Janslyceum collected 3250 Euro. With this money they offer MAMA-LIGHT solar lamps to children in Burkina Faso who don't have access to electricity. This will provide the possibility for those children to study in the evening and to create a better future for themselves.

The Sint-Janslyceum is a secondary school in The Netherlands. Founded in 1918, the school now has over 2000 students.

Sint-Janslyceum in 's-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands

Every year around Christmas the school organizes a special project to make the students aware of the less fortunate people in the world and to organize actions to help. This year the theme for the students of the VWO is "How Light can change a life".

1.5 billion of people in the world don't have access to electricity. The impact for them is high. Without energy and without light it is difficult to escape poverty. Children often have to help at home during the day and have no light in the evening to study. Building and growing a business is very difficult. Industrialization and the creation of jobs is almost impossible. People remain dependent on primitive ways of agriculture and trade and have little ways to grow.

As there is no electricity this means that for light they are dependent on kerosene lamps or that they don't have light at all. But the Kerosene lamps are dangerous. They often cause fire and they create a lot of indoor pollution. This pollution is not only irritation for the eyes but also extremely bad for the health. The estimation of the World Health Organization is that every year 4.3 million people die as a result of using kerosene for lamps and fossil fuels for cooking and indoor heating.

H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma gave an introduction of the project at the Sint-Janslyceum on 2nd of December. She visited 12 of the classes and spoke/discussed with the students about the importance of LIGHT and the consequences for those who have no electricity and how they deal with it.

She gave examples how the life of children changed after they got a MAMA-LIGHT solar lamp. MAMA-LIGHT solar lamp recharges during the day via a small solar panel (10x10 cm) and gives 5 hours of light during the evening. With the MAMA-LIGHT lamp children are able study in the evening. All of the children interviewed made significant progress at school (some even started to go to school now they got light). At the same time the one lamp provided light to the rest of the family. Fathers and mothers now also have light to work in the evening. They not only earn more money now, but also the quality of (family) life improved. See also the flyer below.

The students together with their class teacher have discussed the project and have set up actions to collect money to buy and to donate lamps for schools in Burkina Faso in areas where there is no electricity.

In total the students have collected 3250 Euro with all kind of different actions. Class A2A reached an exceptional result. They organized a sponsored skating action. Sponsors gave students money for each round they skated. In total they collected 849 Euro. One of the studens brought alone 110 Euro together.

On 14th January the money collected is handed over to H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma in the presence of class 2A2 and a few students of other classes. During this session H.R.H. Princess Abze Djigma explained how and where the lamps will be handed over to schools in Burkina Faso.
